Lobia Recipe, Lobia Curry | Red Chori Curry

Lobia recipe is spicy whole lentils popular in North India made in curry style.

Lobia recipe is a spicy vegan whole lentils made with basic Indian spices. This variety of lentils are known as red cow peas or red chori. There is also a another variety of lentils comes called black eyed beans. They are also known as lobia as far as I know. Do not confuse any of these lentils can be cooked in similar way.

These lentils are soaked first then cooked in cooker. It doesn’t take much time to cook. In pressure cooker they can be cooked in 10 – 12 minutes while in a sauce pan it can cooked well in 20 -25 minutes.

This lobia recipe is simple to prepare and also I have made these lentils vegan. Let’s see the recipe.

Ingredients

1 cup red cow peas / red chori
Enough water to soak
1 tablespoon oil
1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon grated ginger garlic
1 large onion, chopped finely
1 tomato, chopped
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1/2 teaspoon garam masala
1/4 teaspoon red chilli powder
2 tablespoons coriander leaves

Step by step lobia recipe

Step 1. Soak lobia in enough water over night or for at least 2 hours.

Step 2. Pressure cook it with a cup of water or it can be cooked in any sauce pan with lid. I cooked them in sauce pan. It took around 20 minutes to cook. Keep it aside.

Step 3. Place a frying pan on medium heat. Add oil to heat up. Add cumin seeds to crackle up then add grated ginger garlic. Saute for a minute till raw aroma goes off.

Step 4. Add chopped onions and saute for about 3-4 minutes or till they are cooked and change colour to golden brown.

Step 5. Add tomatoes and cook for 2 minutes to soften them. Then add turmeric powder, red chilli powder and garam masala.

Step 6. Cook the masala for 1-2 minutes by stirring continously. Once masala starts to come together and oozes out oil in sides it means it is cooke now.

Step 7. Add cowpeas in the masala along with water in which it is cooked. Mix it to combine with masala.

Step 8. Add chopped coriander leaves and mix. Add water if required to adjust consistency.

Step 9. Let it simmer on low heat for 8- 10 minutes. To thicken it mash the lobia little bit. Then switch off the gas.

Delicious lobia recipe is ready to serve along baingan bharta and hot chapati.
