Step by step Kala chana recipe

kala chana curry recipe

Kala chana recipe is healthy and it tastes very delicious. This chickpea curry is prepared with black chickpeas cooked in tomato and onion gravy. Kala chana curry goes well with puri, phulka or rice.

Kala Chana (black chickpeas) is very high in protein and has a low glycemic index. It is also known as Bengal gram. In India these chickpeas are also eaten as raw sprouts. In India kala chana masala (no onion-garlic) is very commonly prepared in Hindu festival Navratri for sacrament (prashad). There is one another popular snack called chana jor garam which is prepared from these black chickpeas.

In this recipe I have used cherry tomato as I had only them in my kitchen today. Cherry tomato really added flavour to the curry.  Many chefs used gram flour to thicken the gravy but I have not used it. If you wish, you may add 1 teaspoon of gram flour in the end of the recipe or in starting when cumin seeds are crackled in steps below.

Let’s see the recipe now. !!

Ingredients

1 ½ cup of dried black chickpeas/kala chana (soaked overnight or for 7 hours)
1 medium size onion, finely chopped
5-6 cherry tomato, or 1 large tomato
1 teaspoon ginger garlic paste
½ teaspoon red chilli powder
½ teaspoon garam masala powder
1 teaspoon corriander powder
¼ tsp turmeric
2 pinch of asafoetida
1 teaspoon cumin
2 tablespoon olive oil
salt as required

Let’s prepare kala chana curry step by step

Step 1. Wash and soak the black chickpeas or kala chana in 5 cups of water overnight or for 7-8 hours . In a pressure cooker, add soaked black chickpeas and 2 glass of water. Boil the black chickpeas on medium flame. After boiling do not strain the chickpeas. Keep it along the water used in boiling as it contains nutrition. Place a pan over medium heat and add olive oil. Once oil get hot add cumin, crackle them.
